Tungsten balls

Finally, after almost a month and customs the parts for df03 melted diff. i was recommended to change to acer tungsten balls .i also got some new plates and some aluminium tape , which in the end triggered the customs check.

Here’s what arrived :

1x Tamiya 51248 Spur Gear Set DF03

2x Tamiya 50880 Ball Diff Plate Set

2x T004 Acer Racing Tungsten Carbide Diff Balls 3.0mm T004

also arrived but not directly connected to the Diff

1x HPI Racing Aluminum Tape 50×2.5m

2x Pro-Line Racing 1070 Dirt Hawg II 2.2 tires for the Blitzer Beetle (only one set pictured)

1x Robinson Racing13 Tooth32 Pitch Pinion Gear RRP0130 for the Blitzer Beetle (not pictured as its already installed)

df03 diff rebuilding material and some tires

Here’s the result of the first run of the DF03 with ezrun 8.5t  . The diff was probably not tightened enough.

of to the spare parts section of ebay .

Down under

the weather is finally ok again .

took the Dark impact and the Dual Hunter for a bash . This was the first outing for the EZrun 8.5t brushless combo. i must say im satisfied with the power , but i definitely must glue the tires .

We found a new bashing spot in an active mini quarry , the ground is hard packed with lots of small to medium pebbles and lots and lots of fine dust , the dust trails are spectacular. Luckily you can retreat on a nearby hill made of stones .

by the end of the first battery i’ve noticed that the rear wheels aren’t getting the same power as the front, so i’m guessing that the diff must be loose. i switched to the Blitz ,which was having trouble putting down traction on the loose dirt, the slipper clutch needed adjusting, but i didn’t bother with it since we were pressed for time.

Mojca drove the Dual Hunter, which now with lipo power drives even better . it soldiered on with no problem until the servo screw got loose. i need to modify the servo fitting as the high torque servo i have in it now ,moves too much.

Adventures in Brushless land

The weather is lousy , but things are moving along .

over the last few days a couple of things arrived :

– XT60 connectors for switching over from Tamiya plugs

– an used Ezrun B5 combo (8.5 turn brushless motor with a 60 amp ESC)

– Five Stars FS7039 Steel main shaft for DF03 Slipper clutch all the way from Champ International JR from Osaka Japan, this shaft seems to be the only thing which is wrong with the df03, as it replaces the aluminium shaft of the original tamiya kit . They also seem to be very hard to find out of Japan.

– Tamiya 53922 05pinion Gear 23T,25T

– Tamiya 53925 DF03 Slipper Clutch set

– and some bearings, but thats another story.

components to make the DF03 brushless ready , with the holy grail , the Fivestars FS7039 Steel main shaft for DF03 Slipper clutch

After Mojca became a master of soldering and converted over all the XT60 plugs , i was ready to go to install the Ezrun 8.5 into the DF03.

EZrun 3650 is a full size 540 motor, with even more torque than the 3650s finned motors which are 380 motors in a 540 can

The Fivestars shaft is a perfect replacement , for the Tamiya part , installation was flawless , except that i forgot the two shims on the original shaft , so i had to take it apart twice 🙂

DF03 slipper clutch is necessary for a brushless motor. keeps the torque at bay

After everything was wired up , a problem appeared . if i kept the ESC and the receiver on the side opposite the servo , i ran out of space. that might work on a DF03ra chassis which has a sedan body , but the DF03 buggy body is tiny , so i moved the receiver to the other side and now it all fits .

no way to get the body on.

everywhere you look for pictures of the ezrun esc,  no one shows you the pair of resistors which are rather large (almost the 1/2 size of the ESC) .

now it all fits , even with the Turnigy 4000 mah lipo and its thick cables

i’ve tested with the body on and its perfect . i need to tidy up the wiring a bit its basically done . judging from the acceleration test in the living room its wickedly fast , definitely faster than the blitz. Its using the 82t spur wheels included with the slipper clutch and  23t pinion. now only if the weather will clear up so i can get some driving done.

well , it was weekend of 50/50 running . On Saturday we sat out on running the road cars, i tried the TA03F Audi A4 STW and Mojca her Subaru, we tested a new car park which was ok , but i forgot to bring the broom , so the sweeping for pebbles was done with our feet. we setup for running and Mojca develops a steering problem early on , so she has to retire, we didn’t bring any spare cars so she got to watch how i flung the Audi around corners. It runs really really good, its a chassis with about 12 years in between building and actual running, i’ve done a bit of a sloppy job back then, but all is fixed this time . i love the sound the belt makes.

So today , i say , lets go run the off roader. This time the i get problems with the Dark Impact,as i was seriously dumb enough to run it without a gearbox cover. it ran really well , while it ran , which was about for 3 minutes. (kinda like a Ferrari 🙂 First time the pinion gear got dislodged, fixed that and , after that some pebble gut behind the spur gear and blocked it all up . what was i thinking. so ill take the gear cover from my DF03RA and also order some M Parts.  Meanwhile the Dual Hunter runs like there’s no tomorrow, no problems to report there. The 20t pinions i ordered still haven’t arrived, but it should be any day now. Next in line is two Sport Tuned motors for the much needed power boost.

so over all a 50/50 weekend. Bask in the beauty of the Quattro !

Tamiya STW Audi A4 Quattro

Bouncy fixed

Finished the rebuild of the DF03 Dark Impact as the shock parts arrived two days ago , in retrospect i should have ordered the whole M parts again , as i am already missing two bits. ah well, by the end of the month.

back on its own legs

Nothing much to say about it , except that the previous owner didn’t put the shocks together properly .The new body should arrive any day now, then all it needs is a slipper clutch.

First Bash

Had a first bash with Mojca today . took the Dual Hunter and the DF03 Dark Impact . The terrain was a bit too rough for the Dark Impact to properly show its qualities , but on the clean parts it went superbly. The Dual Hunter goes like crazy at anything you put in front of it . The ESC needs a bit of a tweak as it goes into reverse instantly , so you can’t brake . Driving was supper fun, the batteries didn’t last long enough, im ordering my first lipo next week.

Here’s some pics :

and after

waiting for better terrain...

off road starts here

The extended postman finally brought my ebay win. An used DF03 Dark Impact and also used TB01 Lancer.

both in excellent condition and escs. The Lancer shell is a bit used but i did order shoo goo to repair the ford , so this one when repaired will be the primary rally shell.

i cleaned the DF03 to make it ready for tommorows run , after that it gets dissambled and cleaned properly. the TB01 is missing a couple of screws but works. that one is just getting cleaned and disassembled.

DF03 Dark Impact , who the original owner painted white for some reason and TB01 Lancer with wrong rims

Tomorrow we run the Dual Hunter and the DF03  and hopefully not from the police as the bashing place is semi illegal .
