Season Recap 2015 aka the post G6 carnage report !

Here it is the end of the season recap.

I managed to finish more events that i started in but i still DNFed in both G6 this year, in Austria after gate 1 because of a stupid stupid error with the soldering on the transmitter (note to self , bring spare car next year and change transmitter) and in Italy , about 20 gates before the end because of a broken panhard mount, but i had lots of fun that day and i did loose my fear of water.

But on the other hand, Mojca won both the women’s classes and is the Driving Diva of Europe 2015 !!!!!!!

We also competed in our first Sorcca event , and we did fine, i managed a clean second stage but badly explained rules by the italians meant first stage was a write off .

I also attended the ASTS final in Retz and it is still amazing . Lukas set a super difficult course .

So lessons learned :

  • always carry a plastic bag with you
  • buy proper transmitter
  • build even tougher
  • build trucks to the rules
  • bring a spare car
  • and spare everything if possible
  • buy better tent pegs for Ersberg !
  • those pesky scale nuts
  • night runs are awesome !

Czech CEST 2015

Yesterday we got back from a 4 day trip to  the Czech event in Central European Scale Trophy in Dekanske Skaly in the Czech Republic. It was a blast !

20150801-CZCEST5

I got Second place in Class 2 / Ultimate and so did the team we were in . If Mojca didn’t get the penalised for lacking lights and accessories she would have won the class as she had a clean event and i had 3 gate touches .

20150801-CZCEST6

We started after a group of LandRovers which were nice and all, but they had to winch themselves all over the place, which takes time. So the stage lasted 4 hours instead of 1.

20150804-CZCEST7

Nothing broke on both our trucks. Mojca’s winch got snagged at one point, but she did manage to fix it .

20150804-CZCEST8

The Cherokee can keep up with class 2 vehicles even though the tires are lower , the TCS skid plate helps a lot .

20150801-CZCEST3

I feel i have to practice a bit more on the steeper decent, thats the only area I had issues with because of lack of confidence in me and not the truck.

20150801-CZCEST4

The Servo Winch works great , only thing I could want is a bit more line speed.

20150804-CZCEST1

Its time to start preparing for the next one , the Austrian G6 in 4 weeks time .

EDIT:

a video of almost all video material I made before my Xiaomi YI lost power.

Heat wave

The current heat wave of 35 degrees celsius is putting a serious dent into my life , not to mention RC .

But we did manage a nice 2 hour trail and crawl at an amazing location on Vrsic pass.

20150719-heatwave3

its a nice very nice location accessible by car an hour and something away from Ljubljana. the mountain pass is at 1611 meters height, so the temperature was a nice 25 degrees celsius.

20150719-heatwave4

we made it up a trail for about 150 meters then turned back on a different route . the terrain was nice, quite steep , lots of rocks and lots of fine dust which wrecked havoc with traction at points.

20150719-heatwave5

Mojca is running a new set of the 1.9 Falken wild peaks on her G6 jeep and the extra height was quite noticeable compared to the Cherokee. I had to use the throttle on some sections to slide it over. Mojca also runs a new Tower Pro MG968 DIGI 2 servo. with its 24kgs of torque it was so strong it first bent the rod end on the steering link, then eventually it broke it . The whole link will get replaced with the traxxas revo rod ends. Mojca is finally getting used to the sliders which don’t bend.

20150719-heatwave2

Whilst Mojca was having problems with the rod end popping of , i popped a bead . I guess the nuts got loose, but I reseated the bead on the trail and made it fine to the end. The tires are getting pretty chewed up, Thew will have to last for the Czech event , but for the G6 pair, a new set should be on order .

20150719-heatwave6

It was a great little Sunday trip, which served as an indicator on what to fix and tweak before the Czech event .

The season begins

its a late start, but the first trail of the season is complete .

20150504-newseason4

The bluemonkey CMS on the Cherokee works great , did not notice a lack of performance. It performed just as good it did with a servo on axle at last years G6 . i will go with a stronger servo in the future, the CMS does seem a bit more taxing on it.

20150504-newseason2

the DivaMobil (working name) performs great , the small tweaks it got during the building and the great foams from CI make it a great climber, also its making me want new tires on the Cherokee. The extra height makes a difference . Mojca’s driving is also really good, a couple more tweaks and it will be ready for G6 glory (its a bit top heavy at the moment)

20150504-newseason6

The Winch motor went dead ,so no winching this time . The inner fenders passed the test and need painting . the rear brace needs a bit of fiddling with, also some new tires and shocks will be ordered soon.

20150504-newseason1

On the DivaMobil there is an extensive list of things to be done : , the front lights, fit the winch , make the inner fenders, lower the COG …

Recon G6 Finisher

Last week was one of the harder weeks for me , but it culminated into one of the best weekends of my life… The 2014 Stonerockers festival with the first European Recon G6 !

20141011-stonerockers81

158 starting vehicles, starters from 9 countries, can’t describe the amazing time we had .

20141011-stonerockers9

On the first day i drove the Cherokee and Mojca the Wraith and on the second day we switched .

20141011-stonerockers12

we learned a lot for next time , but we had lots of fun and most important , both rigs made it with out breakages .

20141011-stonerockers1

Helping other people is a very important factor and the winch was working a lot, sometimes getting me trough tough spots , sometimes getting other people out of them

20141011-stonerockers7

the course was superb, Brian Parker did a great job of setting it.

20141016-stonerockers10

I would like to  thank everybody for the pictures , because i honestly couldn’t be bothered to take mine 😀  also a big congratulations to Mojca for wining 3rd place in the Driving Divas class, that sealed the deal for her own next vehicle, she was also a great help on winch anchor spotting duty on the first day .

20141011-stonerockers13

Detailed write up on the rigs will follow sometime next week , when time allows.

Anchored

I’ve managed a short shakedown run today , was supposed to do it yesterday but the hitec servo quit on me because of bad wiring, i can’t really replace it, because the servo is waterproof and has lots of  rubber on the board so ill have multiplex replace it for a fee .  So i took the Savox out of the Wraith as i need one working rig for next weekend and would prefer the Cherokee .

Last week i also fitted the Proline 6084 Rectangular Scale Off-Road Tubular Roof Rack,  it was out of stock everywhere but i managed to find on sale with a Czech whole seller which delivers to a Slovenian store so in the end the price was the same as from the US shipped. The point of the roof rack is not the looks but having a place on the truck for the ground anchor and tow straps.

20140629-ancored1

Scale winching is really fun , it adds a whole new dimension to driving, now you can go almost anywhere . One problem i have with the Rcoffroad.eu pull pal is that its a bit too big for the Cherokee, the scale isn’t right , so i have a smaller one from R2j on order.

20140629-ancored2

I need to make a cargo net for roof rack and a storage box for the recovery straps .

Shakedown complete

Yesterday I did a shakedown run on Roznik to iron out all the kinks and test the new components.

trail31052014

The run was a 2.5hour for 4.2 km . I went with a strict no hand of god policy and used it only 3 times , because Roznik is still impassable in some areas after the sleet downed trees.

20140531-shakedown1

The new lights look great and the bumper lights are now remote switchable thanks to the Turnigy remote on/off switch.

20140531-shakedown2

I have to repaint the rear wheel wells as the primer i used was shit and the paint just flakes of.

20140531-shakedown3

the winch line snapped on the first winching and i didn’t have any needle nose pliers in the trail pack with me so i couldn’t fix it . I did order some better wire on wednesday .

20140531-shakedown4

the left front wheel hub kept slipping of , i almost lost it the first time . ill try some thread lock to see if it helps.

20140531-shakedown5

The metal work was really really worth it , the compact front one allows a much better approach angle. And the sliders now actually slide instead of bending in.

20140531-shakedown7

The wheel weights and the extra weight of the metalwork moved the balance a bit rearward and it really shows on the descent.

20140531-shakedown6

im really thinking of going to 3s as the truck is not as peppy as it used to be with the new extra weight . a double of 2200 3s should be enough since this run today was on a single 5300 2s and it wasn’t even at the LVC when i was done .

That smell

Lets kick things of . I have been super busy with other things so there was not much time for RC , but i did get some Blade flying time in.

I took the Wraith up to Roznik to check out the devastation the sleet made and to start the 2014 RC season.  It all went fine until i started noticing a certain smell … of burning windings. The 27 turn stock axial kicked the bucket , it still works , and i’ve managed to get the Wraith almost to the top , but it lacks the torque it used to have . So its time for a new motor .

Processed with VSCOcam with g2 preset

ill use the disassembly time to swap around the receiver to the 6 channel and maybe change the transmission case to a metal one, if i can get it in time.

Terra Rosa

From Monday to Friday we took a small break to the seaside town of Novigrad in Croatia. The Axials came with us and on Wednesday the weather cleared and out we went .

The terrain this time was terra rosa, the red claylike dirt of Istria and the rocks by the sea. It was a first proper rock terrain and it was a glorious 2 hour outing in the sun.

The trucks held up great , the Wraith had its front drive shaft screw unscrew itself , screwed it back and onwards it went. It also lost the m3 lock nut on the servo horn but it still ran as the ball head had no room to slip of.  I need to add some m3 locknuts to the field kit .

The SCX10 drive shaft snapped of the yoke right at the end. i haven’t fixed that yet, but i do have some traxxas drive shafts which should do the trick. In the warmer temperature the memory foams in the baja claws performed very well but i still plan to replace them with some of Martin’s foams. Mojca really enjoyed driving the Cherokee , i guess its about time we get her a Rubicon

Overall im really happy ! it was a great holiday !

Breakdown

Today me and  friend of mine took both the truck up Roznik. I was meaning to go test out the Wraith before the holiday so i know its solid . Well guess what . Both trucks broke down even before the root area started.  It was a shame because my friend was really enjoying his first time , even though he has a lead foot.

The Wraith didn’t like the low gearing combo and just would not run after a while . Also it was a bit loud. I guess the 14 pinion 87 spur was a bit too much.

The SCX10 broke the pin in the Axial Universals , it might have been a bad pin or the end points or a culminations of all .

It was all too much to fix in the field, so we packed the trucks up and went up the hill for a coffee.

pin fix

pin fix

The fixes at home were quite easy, the SCX10 cvd pin replacement is a 1.5mm drill bit cut down to size . On the Wraith i took the 24t motor out and put the 27t Axial motor in and changed the pinion back to the 17 tooth. I need to get a 16 tooth pinion somewhere.
