Recon G6 Finisher

Last week was one of the harder weeks for me , but it culminated into one of the best weekends of my life… The 2014 Stonerockers festival with the first European Recon G6 !

158 starting vehicles, starters from 9 countries, can’t describe the amazing time we had .

On the first day i drove the Cherokee and Mojca the Wraith and on the second day we switched .

we learned a lot for next time , but we had lots of fun and most important , both rigs made it with out breakages .

Helping other people is a very important factor and the winch was working a lot, sometimes getting me trough tough spots , sometimes getting other people out of them

the course was superb, Brian Parker did a great job of setting it.

I would like to  thank everybody for the pictures , because i honestly couldn’t be bothered to take mine 😀  also a big congratulations to Mojca for wining 3rd place in the Driving Divas class, that sealed the deal for her own next vehicle, she was also a great help on winch anchor spotting duty on the first day .

Detailed write up on the rigs will follow sometime next week , when time allows.

Those effin LEDs

the Axial LEDs are great until they work , or start to develop a bad connection , then you fiddle around with them and break a pin off , and then swearing ensues

i’ve ordered up some new ones and will make a whole new string .

The  Wraith is built back, i have only tested it inside but its super torquey compared to what i had before , the top speed is a bit less now, if it really bothers me i might switch to 3s, but i think it wont , because the initial wheel speed is excellent ! I have removed the light buckets for the time being , also i have changed the receiver to the 6 channel version to get more space for the future.

I have never done any flex shots, as i don’t care for it particularly, but this one does flex quite nicely.

More Motor

finally some new postal arivals:

from Amain hobbies:

HH-TM-EX-35 Holmes Hobbies Torquemaster expert 35t (for the Wraith)

– RRP1711 Robinson Racing Hardened 32P Absolute Pinion Gear 11t  (for the Sawback)

from a local supplier :

– 3m 2367 masking tape

The tape seems of similar quality than the Tamiya stuff, but cheaper . Will see how it turns out on the next paint project, but Chris from Hemistorm recommended it, so it must be good.

after a bit of a desk cleanup and some urgent maintenance on the MCX2 helicopter i started the install of the new motor in the Wraith (the smoked axial still stinks a bit).

more on this mess next time .

That smell

Lets kick things of . I have been super busy with other things so there was not much time for RC , but i did get some Blade flying time in.

I took the Wraith up to Roznik to check out the devastation the sleet made and to start the 2014 RC season.  It all went fine until i started noticing a certain smell … of burning windings. The 27 turn stock axial kicked the bucket , it still works , and i’ve managed to get the Wraith almost to the top , but it lacks the torque it used to have . So its time for a new motor .

Processed with VSCOcam with g2 preset

ill use the disassembly time to swap around the receiver to the 6 channel and maybe change the transmission case to a metal one, if i can get it in time.

Stars and Fenders

On monday a large but light package arrived from Martin @ RCBITZ

They are the  follow up parts to the Seaside crawl :

RC4WD Wraith Inner Fenders

Set of 4 Star cut foams 2.2

More on the foams will follow in a separate post , and now to the Wraith inner fenders.

The inner fenders come in a huge bag in 4 separate pieces , the moulding isn’t of tamiya quality but its ok . the lexan is nice and thick. I had to do some extra trimming for Eloys droop kit.20131111-fenderedstars3

There is plenty of material in the original design so more trimming is in order , i cut one side and Mojca did the other one and the holes for the droop kit. Hers was better.

The fenders were painted with PS-5 Black then followed up with a bit of PS-55 flat clear. This was done for two purposes , first i did not want the black to stand out that much and second it was test of how PS-55 works, which will be used in a future project .

The mounting is quite solid especially on the back where it notches into the the rear , wish they did that in the front too. I was afraid it would interfere with Eloys front battery plate , but i can attest that it does not .

Overall its a nice upgrade . it adds to the looks and keeps crap out of the front under hood area. The closing of the rear area allows me to start finishing the electronics placement in the back.

more on this , in the next post

Braces for the Wraith

one of the more annoying things in the rear of the wraith was the shock brace which limited the internal space.

the mess before

the mess before

i didn’t have any posts long enough so i made some out of m3 threaded rod , aluminium tube and some nuts . a bit of measuring and dremeling later…

Hopefully tomorrow the internal fenders arrive so i can start the mockup and make the cable extensions.

Gears, Shims and Oil (Aftermath part 2)

The great rebuild continues . Last week a package from the US arrived , the bad bad people on customs stuck me with a charge of 12 Eur for a 32 Eur package …

The parts are the following

Axial AX30395 Heavy Duty Bevel Gear Set – 38T/13T

2x  Axial AX30205 Spring 12.5x40mm 2.7 lbs/in – Super Soft (Red)

at the local hobby shop i also picked up

LRP 30wt Silicone shock Oil

LRP clutch shims

During the last couple of days i have done lots of work on the trucks.

On the Wraith i’ve replaced the front axle gears with the HD ones and shimmed the gears on both axles.  I’ve cleaned up all the shocks and rebuilt the front ones completely . One of the front ones seem to need a new shock cap as it popped of a couple of time during the bleeding .

On the SCX10 i’ve cleaned and rebuilt all of the shocks with the new LRP 30 wt oil and replaced the stock bigger springs with the softer red ones .  The axles i also shimmed  which was a very very very messy job with the grease in them , oh boy was it messy . On the rear gear i’ve changed the output shaft from the wraith gears so its now the newer drilled trough one. Also i’ve switched over the rear shaft to the traxxas .

On the Wraith i’ve tested an idea of putting the mesh on the back of the bed and it looks good . Since the inner fenders are on the way i have opened up the Wraith and removed the body panels and the electronics and will finally finalize the rear placement .

The aftermath part 1

This is what arrived yesterday, all from asiatees

Axial AX30835 Axial SCX10 Aluminum Servo Horn 24T (Hard Anodized)

Axial AX80049 Axial SCX10 Axial LED Lens Set – Yellow/Clear (4pcs)

GPM WR024BK Axial Wraith Aluminum Servo Mount – 3pcs Set Black

I’ve installed the Wraith servo mount and its stronger than the stock one , i’ve also reused the shorter wraith servo plate on the scx10.

on the SCX10 i’ve changed the servo horn the axial alu one , size wise its about the same as the sanded down answer rc one i use on the wraith. i did the sanding by hand before i got the dremel, hence the ghetto look.

The driveshaft which slipped of the yoke was preety bent , so i replaced it with the Traxxas 1951 driveshaft pair . It just slipped on without a problem, good thing i bought it in advance last year.

The Wraith has developed a particular issue in the gearbox , but more on that next time.

Terra Rosa

From Monday to Friday we took a small break to the seaside town of Novigrad in Croatia. The Axials came with us and on Wednesday the weather cleared and out we went .

The terrain this time was terra rosa, the red claylike dirt of Istria and the rocks by the sea. It was a first proper rock terrain and it was a glorious 2 hour outing in the sun.

The trucks held up great , the Wraith had its front drive shaft screw unscrew itself , screwed it back and onwards it went. It also lost the m3 lock nut on the servo horn but it still ran as the ball head had no room to slip of.  I need to add some m3 locknuts to the field kit .

The SCX10 drive shaft snapped of the yoke right at the end. i haven’t fixed that yet, but i do have some traxxas drive shafts which should do the trick. In the warmer temperature the memory foams in the baja claws performed very well but i still plan to replace them with some of Martin’s foams. Mojca really enjoyed driving the Cherokee , i guess its about time we get her a Rubicon

Overall im really happy ! it was a great holiday !

Que the pictures…

and the complementary too long video featuring squeaks and lots of roll overs

Today me and  friend of mine took both the truck up Roznik. I was meaning to go test out the Wraith before the holiday so i know its solid . Well guess what . Both trucks broke down even before the root area started.  It was a shame because my friend was really enjoying his first time , even though he has a lead foot.

woodside pitstop

The Wraith didn’t like the low gearing combo and just would not run after a while . Also it was a bit loud. I guess the 14 pinion 87 spur was a bit too much.

The SCX10 broke the pin in the Axial Universals , it might have been a bad pin or the end points or a culminations of all .

It was all too much to fix in the field, so we packed the trucks up and went up the hill for a coffee.

pin fix

pin fix

The fixes at home were quite easy, the SCX10 cvd pin replacement is a 1.5mm drill bit cut down to size . On the Wraith i took the 24t motor out and put the 27t Axial motor in and changed the pinion back to the 17 tooth. I need to get a 16 tooth pinion somewhere.
